Peter
Kay Has Best TV One
Liner
A
line from
Peter
Kay's
Phoenix Nights - "Garlic
bread, it's the future,
I've tasted it" - has
been named the best
comic one-liner in an
online poll.
The
quote by Peter Kay's
character, Brian Potter,
was voted top by a poll
of 4,000 people
commissioned by
UKTV
Gold.
In
second place was a line
from the Mrs Merton Show
starring Caroline
Aherne, who famously
asked Debbie McGee why
she married magician
Paul Daniels.
"So,
what first attracted you
to the millionaire Paul
Daniels?"
Ricky
Gervais
'
David Brent from The
Office came third with
one of many lines he
used in a vain attempt
to impress his
employees.
"If
you were to ask me to
name three geniuses, I
probably wouldn't say
Einstein, Newton... I'd
go Milligan, Cleese,
Everett,
Sessions."
Other
programmes to feature in
the top 50 include
Fawlty Towers, The Vicar
of Dibley, Only Fools
and Horses, I'm Alan
Partridge and
Blackadder.
Voters
were asked to choose
their favourite
one-liners from a
shortlist of 50 picked
from British comedy
shows, past and
present.
"The
poll shows that lines
from more recent comedy
series are just as
fondly remembered and
quoted by members of the
public as those from
years ago," said UKTV
Gold's channel head,
James Newton.
"The
one-liners on this list
come from a real mix of
characters and are
memorable for being
sharp and utterly
hilarious," he
added.
