Dutch
Name Tulip After Katie
Melua
Singer
Katie
Melua
has come into bloom
after being presented
with a Dutch tulip named
Tulipa Katie Melua in
her honour.
The
special pink, white
edged Tulipa Crispa Roze
took 15 years of
cultivation but will now
take on the name of the
best-selling
artist.
Melua,
who sold more than a
million albums in
Britain last year, is
also a huge hit in
Holland where her record
Piece By Piece has gone
triple
platinum.
Speaking
after she was presented
with the newly-named
tulip, the star said:
"It is quite unexpected
but really
flattering."
Others
who have had specially
cultivated tulips named
after them include rock
legends Pink Floyd and
the Dutch artist
Rembrandt.
Jan
Huiberts, director of
AGrass, the cultivators
that helped produce the
tulip, said: "Katie
Melua is a beautiful
woman with a wonderful
character and an
exceptional voice. The
people of the
Netherlands love her and
it was a very natural
choice to honour her by
naming this tulip after
her."
