George Clooney
To Present Academy Award
Oscar
nominee George
Clooney
will also present a statuette to one of
the winners at Sunday's Academy
Awards.
Clooney,
44, is up for best director and best
original screenplay for Good Night and
Good Luck and best supporting actor for
Syriana.
Tight
security measures including sniffer dogs
and bomb squads will be put in place to
protect the ceremony's venue, Hollywood's
Kodak Theatre.
Thousands
of police and security guards will patrol
the area.
"There's
no specific threat against the Oscars, but
it's something we're always prepared for,"
said Los
Angeles Police
Department
spokesman Paul Vernon.
3,500
people will attend the ceremony on
Hollywood Boulevard, while viewers across
the globe will watch the show on
television.
Local
shops will be closed and several streets
will be sealed off and inspected by the
bomb squad the day before the
event.
"The
security is always very tight and
ubiquitous and we are confident that our
guests and our winners will be safe from
any threat," said Academy of Motion
Pictures Arts and Sciences communications
chief John Pavlik.
Mr
Pavlik also voiced concerns about the
weather forecast.
"We are
also trying to fight the rain. We have to
put a contingency plan to cover the red
carpet in place if it's going to rain.
It's a big job," he said.
