Singer Pete
Doherty Faces Sentencing
Babyshambles
singer Pete
Doherty
is to be sentenced by a London court after
admitting possession of heroin.
The
26-year-old, currently remanded in custody
at Pentonville Prison, will appear before
Ealing Magistrates Court.
The
performer was arrested by plain clothes
police officers in Whitechapel, east
London on 26 January 2006.
Policemen
acted because he looked dishevelled and
was a known drug user, an earlier hearing
at Thames Magistrates Court was
told.
They
searched Doherty and found a wrap of white
powder in the pocket of his jeans, the
court heard.
At the
time, Doherty told the officers: "It was
in my pocket from earlier, I didn't even
know it was there."
He
added: "Please, officers, don't do this.
I've got a gig tonight, cut me a
break."
Babyshambles
had been due to play in Newcastle that
evening.
Refusing
a bail application made on the singer's
behalf, District Judge Stephen Dawson told
him: "I'm sorry if my order will affect
your fans and people who go to your
concerts."
At a
separate hearing, a charge of driving
whilst unfit due to drug use was dropped
because of a lack of evidence.
Doherty
appeared in the same court the previous
week, and admitted possessing heroin,
crack cocaine, morphine and
marijuana.
