James Blunt
Picks Up Two Awards At
Brits
British
singer James
Blunt
emerged from the Brit Awards with two
wins.
He was
delighted with his gold statuettes for
Best British Male and Best Pop Act. After
the ceremony he said: "Now I'm going to
retire and become a mercenary in South
America."
The
28-year-old is an unlikely pop star -
educated at Harrow, he trained at
Sandhurst before joining the Household
Cavalry and serving in Kosovo.
He has a
distinctive high-pitched voice and as he
picked up the award for Best British Male
he said: "I've been accused so many times
of singing like a girl. Now I've won Best
British Male, maybe it will remind me I
should sing more like a man in future. I
promise to do so."
The
former Army captain was expected to win
Best British Single for his smash hit
You're Beautiful.
But the
honour went instead to Speed Of Sound by
Coldplay, who also won Best British Album
for the multi-million seller X &
Y.
Coldplay
used the ceremony to announce they will be
taking a break from public appearances.
"You won't see us at one of these for
many, many years," said frontman Chris
Martin.
Collecting
the award for Best British Single, Martin
dropped to his knees and said: "It's hard
for us sometimes because we're English and
we don't get to admit that we're great, so
tonight we'd like to agree with you for
giving us this award."
Martin
also said a few words in support of James
Blunt, telling the audience: "Stop giving
James Blunt a hard time. Be proud of him,
he's British and all that
stuff."
