Gary Glitter
Trial Poised For February
Former
rock star Gary
Glitter
is to go on trial in Vietnam next month
for committing obscene acts with two
girls, officials have said.
"We
expect to put him on trial in the second
half of next month," said Ta Quoc Viet,
head of the Criminal Court in Ba Ria Vung
Tau province.
Glitter
- real name Paul Gadd - could face up to
seven years in jail if found guilty of the
offences.
A charge
of child rape, carrying the death
sentence, was dropped.
But if
fresh evidence is uncovered during the
course of the trial, the charge could be
reconsidered, said Mr Viet.
He added
that the court will decide whether the
trial will be public or behind closed
doors.
Glitter
has been held in a Vietnamese prison since
November when he was caught trying to flee
the country on a flight from Ho Chi Minh
City.
The
obscene acts were allegedly committed
against two girls aged 12 and 13 at
Glitter's home in Vung Tau.
He is
alleged to have fondled and kissed the
girls as well as engaged in other physical
acts.
In
December, Glitter's lawyer made
compensatory payments to the families of
the girls, who have appealed to the courts
for clemency for Glitter.
Glitter
was convicted of possessing child porn in
Britain in 1999 and served half of a
four-month jail sentence.
He later
went to Cambodia, which permanently
expelled him in 2002.
